Transform Freetown Inc.

Our Purpose

To support development in Freetown, Sierra Leone in the areas of Environmental Management, Urban Planning and Housing, Education, Skills Development, Job Creation in the Tourism Industry, Disability, Health and Sanitation. We will look to support the broad range of activities listed above that will mitigate the effects of global climate change and global warming. We primarily look to raise funds in the United States that can support these goals in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone remains among the world’s poorest countries, ranking 180th out of 187 countries in the United Nations Human Development Index in 2011. Sierra Leone has made considerable progress since the end of the civil war in 2002, consolidating peace, democracy and improving development indicators amid rising rates of economic growth. We feel Transform Freetown Inc.’s goal of providing provide support to the region can be an important and even critical factor in maintaining the positive trajectory in the progress that has already been made.

Fundraising

Raising funds for Transform Freetown will enable us to fund various projects that serve the goals of our organization. We will choose from projects vetted by the Freetown City Council.

In 2020-2021 we will be focused on Reforestation. Since 2013, Sierra Leone has experienced a dramatic spike in tree loss. Rapid development, overharvesting of timber, and a crash-and-burn agriculture are among the major causes of tree loss. In August 2017, depleting the land of its trees and natural characteristics saw a tragic turn. More than 1,000 Sierra Leoneans died during an early morning landslide, leaving more than 6,000 locals homeless. Scientists and engineers attribute the landslide to deforestation. The landslide encouraged international intervention, including a United Nations initiative that hired local women to help excavate and replant trees along the now-baron mountainside.

The Freetown City Council has a campaign called #OneMillionTreesInFreetown with a goal to plant one million trees in Freetown. Global Environment Day on June 5th is typically an annual kick-off for Tree planting as it coincides with the start of the rainy season. Trees have a much greater chance of survival if they are planted in the rainy season, as no irrigation exists to support their growth.

Transform Freetown Inc. will support this important project. Other projects is the Cleanest Zone competition. Sanitation (solid and liquid waste) is one of the biggest challenges in Freetown. In solving this problem, it is essential that everyone does their bit. The Cleanest Zone in Freetown Competition rewards the communities doing the most to improve sanitation in their zone with amazing prizes which will make a real difference to those communities in the long term. This will be achieved by rewarding communities that achieve the most significant progress in cleanliness, beautification, sustainability, and innovative solutions with prizes, including solar-powered streetlights.
